Bodie: Insights

2 min read
Lottie's House by enunez
In its state of arrested decay, the town of Bodie in California takes us back in time for a glimpse of a real Wild West town. Gold was discovered in the area in 1859, and a mill established by 1861. The town started with about 20 miners and grew to an estimated population of more than 8,000 people by 1880, making it at the time one of the most highly populated towns in California.

Although only a handful of rangers live here now, Bodie is alive with the memories and stories of its townspeople and the lives they led. Behind the dust, shadows, and loneliness of the place, imagination fills the gap. Sometimes, the town appears to be frozen in time, the people from its boom and bust heyday strangely absent. At other times, one can't help but make comparisons with the present day and wonder at how much -- or how little -- things have changed.

I just posted a set of images from Bodie, I hope they give you an insight into this historic and remarkable place, both indoors and out, a perspective beyond the ordinary tourist view or a too-brief peek through the windows.

They are part of a portfolio to be exhibited at ModernBook Gallery, for a show called "Foto Nova 19: An Exhibit by Bay Area Photographers". The result of a Stanford Continuing Studies' class to prepare students for an exhibit.

ICP Awards 2008

2 min read
My image "First Light" made it to the exhibit of the International Conservation Photography Awards 2008.

I am really proud one of my images has  been selected to be in the exhibit in the Museum of Industry and History of Seattle Washington from August 30th until October 12th, as part of the International Conservation Photography Awards 2008. From their website:

"...Known for his passionate advocacy of the environment, nature photographer Art Wolfe created a conservation-themed photo contest in 1997 as "an event for the advancement of photogaphy as a unique medium, capable of bringing awareness and preservation to our environment through art." The 2008 International Conservation Photography Awards is the latest incarnation of Art Wolfe's vision. The ICP Awards is a biennial (every two years) community event involving foundations, sponsors, politicians, and photographers to promote environmental and cultural conservation."

Some of the photographers included in the exhibit are people who I have the fortune to meet either in person or online. And they have been a great inspiration to my own work.

The image is:

And it is included as one of the Flora images.

Last year I made my first roadtrip to Oregon, which was fun. I just came back for my 2nd roadtrip, and I will try to make it a yearly event.

Sorry I have not written much on here... but usually I'm not that good with words.

On this trip I went thru Northern California coast, and in Oregon I stopped at several nice locations including Bandon, Columbia Gorge, Hood River, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Painted Hills, etc.
I will be posting new images as my time allows it.  I hope you enjoy it thru my photos, as well as I did being there.

I joined DeviantART as a friend of mine told me about it, and I was interested in trying it out as it seems to be a really great site for artists (even if I don't consider myself at that level yet), and to share comments and network with like-minded people.

I've been really happy with DA, as I have started to get to know the system better, and a lot of people has shown me great support, I love the feeling of community. I will definitely be spending some time here. Please bare with me as I get better at it, and using all the features.

I'll be adding old images, and keep adding as I make new ones.

Thanks everybody for the welcome, and encouraging words.
